Tripwire’s got what it thinks is the first “complete” virtualization infrastructure management tool for VMware. It’s called vWire and it will continuously monitor the state of virtual systems and correlate data with critical events to provide context and insight into potential issues.

Then it acts to prevent and resolve problems that cause downtime. Either it’ll fix the problem or run further diagnostics.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it?

Well, a moderately small installation with two clusters, six ESX hosts and 60 VMs is calculated to have 38,700 configuration properties for the clusters, hosts and VMs. And VMware likes to have things a certain way.

Tripwire says it huddled with VMware and customers on the widgetry in an effort to save time in troubleshooting system failures, decrease downtime, improve reliability and cut operating costs.

vWire monitors all change, configuration and critical event data and creates a database that can be searched and filtered through a web-accessible dashboard. The capabilities can be customized. Users can also import shared content from the community, expanding the library of tools and solutions.

It’s supposed to alert users to issues not visible in VMware’s VirtualCenter such as high-availability failover events, network link failures and VMs failing to power on.

The widgetry will only be sold online for a promotional price of $295 per physical processor plus $80 per processor for support. It goes to $395 in 60 days. There are volume discounts.
